On the 53rd Commemoration of August 29, 1970 & Civil Rights Movement

 50th Chicana/o Moratorium – Adelitas Declaration

On this date, August 26, 2023, we celebrate and honor “Las Adelitas of the Movement”, the leaders and main unifying force of our community, our movement, and our struggle for justice. Our community organizing has been, and continues to be, based on the strength of women activist throughout the lands. Honoring women as the force that nurtures our issues and policies in society, comes from our appreciation of our mothers, abuelitas, tias, sisters, daughters, and soldaderas that guide our lives daily.

It is this powerful force that keeps us united, fed, protected, and knowledgeable of our roots in family, community, and human spirit.

Women have found their voice since the August 26th date that recognized their right to vote, a day we celebrate this very moment; they have fought the fights for reproductive rights as a human right; they have worked to defend and protect families and our children for immigration rights & protections, shielding our children in detention centers throughout the U.S., and defending against the abuse of women; they have been the strongest voice against wars to protect their sons & daughters, demanding the end of global nuclear threats and the escalation of military waste, while supporting our veterans that have returned home and those fallen heroes.

Throughout history, and since the 1960s and beyond, the women’s movement has become all of our concern, as the 1975 U.S. Supreme Court decision that women are no longer controlled by their husbands, regarding legal signatures for banking rights or contractual rights, codified in law to ensure their independent human rights. Women continue to create change through their leadership in political institutions for labor rights, immigration rights, educational demands, and community protections.

So, on this day, in recognition of the National Day of Equality for Women, we declare our support and recognition to the women who stand on the shoulders of our abuelas, mothers, sisters, daughters, tias, and soldaderas, and commit to continue the struggle of human rights and justice for all.  Viva la Mujer!
